Welcome to Pulpfiction Books!

Vancouver's legendary independent bookstore

Established in June 2000, we're one of Canada's largest and busiest independent bookstores, with over 80,000 titles in three convenient neighborhood locations.  Despite pundits routinely proclaiming the death of the physical book, we're healthy & growing.  As many of our competitors "diversify" away from books into bath towels, bottled water, chocolates & high-end electronics, we're sticking with what we do best: an unrivalled selection of new, used, & out-of-print books chosen by readers, not by algorithms.  Our new releases represent the best of what's available in current fiction and nonfiction, with an emphasis on titles that will be still read in three, five, or even twenty years.  Our used and out-of-print selection changes daily.  Our regular customers tell us our Main Street store has more turnover than any bookstore they've ever been in, and most days see at least several hundred new titles added to the shelves.  Regular book sellers know that we pay more for used books & bring in "the good stuff" ...the ones they'd rather not sell.

Whether you're seeking a recent Hilary Mantel, an out-of-print Clark Ashton Smith, or that little blue book about a pony you had when you were a kid, we'll either have it on our shelves, or be able to help you find it.

If we don't have exactly what you want, we routinely order new books at a discount, typically 30% or more off cover price.  Our special order service is usually faster and cheaper than ordering from big online outfits like Indigo or Amazon.  Unlike them, we never charge for shipping.  And if you order $50+ of books from us at once, we'll deliver them anywhere in the Lower Mainland at no additional charge.

Many frequently asked questions about our shops are answered here, but if you can't find an answer to your question, please call us at 604.876.4311.  We are always glad to hear from you.

BOOK BUYING / TRADING POLICY

We buy and trade books every day up until 5pm at all of our stores.  You never need to call ahead to see if we're buying;  if you're in before 5pm, we'll be happy to look at whatever you've brought. That said, weekends are definitely busier than weekdays at our buying counters (For example, if you come at 3pm on a Saturday, we will still be happy to see you, but you may find yourself waiting at the end of a long line of vendors).

We pay a percentage of what we will sell your books for, based on how often we see the titles you're offering for sale and how quickly we think your books will sell. In general, we'll pay up to 40% of our selling price in cash. We typically don't pay cash for very common authors and titles which we are easily able to obtain on our own. Airport-bookstore / Costco bestsellers like John Grisham, Dan Brown, Danielle Steel, Anne Rice & etc. are hardly ever good candidates for cash or trade.

If you would like to trade for shelf stock, we offer up to 50% of our retail price in store credit, based on our assessment of how quickly we think your books will sell. Trade credit only applies to used books; it cannot be used to purchase new books. Credit not used up on a particular visit is converted to cash and paid out to you at the end of your visit. We do not issue trade slips.

Please note that we do need to see your books before we can make an offer of cash or trade credit, which isn't something we can realistically do from a printed or emailed list.  Please don't email us lists of books for sale; we are unable to respond to such inquiries.

WHAT KIND OF BOOKS DO YOU BUY?

Books We Never Take

Ex-library books, Harlequins, National Geographics, Book Club hardcovers, Time-Life sets, most textbooks, damaged or wet books, highlighted or marked books, most computer books, encyclopedia sets, modern kids' series (Goosebumps; Animorphs; Saddle Club & etc.), self-published poetry, 99% of all sports and health books, stolen books, books we already have too many of.  Very common mass-market paperbacks (Dan Brown, John Sandford, Stuart Woods, John Grisham, Danielle Steel, etc.) are terrible candidates for cash or trade.

Books We're Always Interested in Seeing

Contemporary fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, Beat writing, literary classics (Hesse; Hemingway; Orwell, Vonnegut; Huxley; most Penguin pocket paperbacks) visual art and architecture, classic kids' books (Richard Scarry; Enid Blyton; Roald Dahl), science, travel, cultural studies and philosophy, etc.  Our clients are well-read, unconventional, and bright.

DO I HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SELL OR TRADE MY BOOKS?

Not unless you're bringing 10,000+ books.

DO YOU HAVE PARKING?

There's metered parking in front of all of the shops, and we can usually help you bring your books in from your car.  PFB West and PFB Commercial each have a single dedicated parking stall behind the building, but there is no entry through the back door.

ARE ALL YOUR BOOKS SEARCHABLE ONLINE?

No.  But approximately 4000 books (mostly higher-end collectibles and specialized nonfiction) are listed on Abebooks.com, Alibris.com, and Biblio.com.  Not all of these titles are physically located in our walk-in shops, so it's a good idea to call or email us in advance if you're interested in purchasing an online listing in person.

DO YOU SPECIAL ORDER NEW BOOKS?

All the time! Please call, Tweet or email; we'll be glad to help you.

WHAT'S UP WITH THE PLASTIC RATS?

We can't have a store cat because of severe allergies on the part of several staff. A customer gave us a white plastic rat several years ago, reasoning that the rat would be safe in the store because we lacked a cat. Numerous additional rats have subsequently arrived as anonymous gifts and/or mystery "births."
